8. How have you learnt from this incident? I have learned that in group projects, complete autonomy is never favorable. Groups need to meet more frequently in order to better assure that each group member is on the same page. 9. Any other information? While I was happy to assume a leadership role, I did not feel like I effectively communicated what needed to be finished. With such a truncated schedule, I reverted to doing most of the work as I had little trust in my fellow team members to finish on time.
PRIVATE CRITICAL INCIDENT REPORT II Name: Date: 26 October, 2005 BRIEF EXPLANATION OF INCIDENT 1. Describe the sequence of events surrounding the incident. At the conclusion of our work in the Professional Writing Unit, teams were reassigned and I began work with the Marketing Group in Finance. I rapidly encountered a problem as I was delegated fourteen (14) pages of Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets to complete. 2. What were your initial thoughts/feelings? I was extremely dissatisfied with the delegation of these assignments. I felt that my past successes earned me the brunt of the new project, and that our team leader Miguel Cruz-Mejia exercised cronyism in assigning the lighter loads. 3. What issues/facts were relevant to this situation? Despite the fact that two of the other three members of the team (Mihira Bose and Paul Markovic) were accounting majors with experience in Excel, I was assigned the majority of the work while they were delegated lighter loads such as formatting and WordArt. I was responsible for a workbook of fourteen pages, while Miguel assumed the task of the remaining six, citing his need to manage the group as the primary reason behind his lighter load. The other two students were supposedly unreliable. 4. How did you behave during this incident? I voiced my displeasure, admittedly in an unconstructive fashion. 5. How did others behave? Mihira remained quiet, but Paul and Miguel discounted my appeal and referred me to our Teaching Assistant, presumably for administrative purposes. After arguing both our cases, we were given a two-day extension. However, all tasks remained assigned to their original respective team members. 6. Reflections on the incident (what happened or didn't happen?) There was no discussion in the delegation of responsibilities. There was no referendum used and Miguel failed to seek mutual agreement from the rest of the group. 7. What alternatives would have been possible in relation to (6)? First, the division of duties would have been far more productive. Confrontation could have been avoided if Miguel had only heard the rest of the group's opinions. 8. How have you learnt from this incident? I took from this project that inequities will always exist in the professional world. A negative attitude never helps, even if fueled by righteous indignation.
