Others find lack of teacher training as a major hurdle to incorporation of literacy and numeracy in other curriculum areas (Hancock and Eyers 2004, Stables, Martin and Arnhold 2004). These studies contend that already overburdened teachers are now expected to provide an even more diverse instruction in content without the appropriate resources or training to undertake such a venture (Stables, Martin and Arnhold 2004). Others, however, strongly support the use of literacy and numeracy strategies across the curriculum, highlighting the enriched learning experience available to pupils who benefit from such instruction and to the increase in skills such studies contend result (Smith et al 2004). Various government studies and publications side, not surprisingly, with such findings (DfES 2003, DfES 2003b). Several of these studies focus on specific programmes and initiatives that have been found to be effective or enriching (Warwich and Maloch 2003). These studies, a sample list of which is included in the References section of this research proposal, will be evaluated and summarized in greater detail in this research's literature review. It is expected that such review of literature will further help to both guide the actual research undertaken and predict possible outcomes of this research.
TIMELINE The following timeline is tentative, and may be modified if responses from those queried are not as forthcoming or are more promptly forthcoming than anticipated, if scheduling conflicts on the part of educators require adjustment to the holding of the focus group, and similar considerations. Week 1 3: Complete Literature Review, Create initial questionnaire Week 4: Pilot questionnaire with several educators, Make list of schools and collect contacts at each school Week 5: Mail out questionnaires Week 6 7: Follow-up calls to ensure questionnaires are returned Week 7: Invite respondents to focus group, begin tabulating questionnaire data Week 8: Finish questionnaire data, finalize question list for focus group Week 9: Hold focus group Week 10: Code and analyse data from focus group, send thank you's to participants Week 11 14: Write up results of research
