High standard of communication form in the form of writing and speaking is required for professionals especially for application for the post in health care set up. Communication in professional- carer relationship Family members and carer feel them selves uninvolved in health care and professionals also have not always been attuned to the special need of family members and importance of collaborative relationship with family members. Carer and family members also have limited access to information, affecting patient care. (Robinson 2000) Communication in team work Small group communication refers to verbal and non verbal communication that occurs among a collection of individuals. This group can be involved in clinical management of a condition like operative procedure or in discussion in of topic for organizational purposes or in a process of handling interview process. There are several components of team work functioning. First of all, goal provide the reason and motivation for the people to form a group and it is important that goal should be clear and shared to a considerable extent among group members.(Cartwright 1992).Leader behaviour plays an important role in guiding the group, developing norms and facilitating communication. Leader behaviors such as emotional stimulation, caring, executive functioning, are linked to effective group functioning. In addition to verbal communication, understanding of non- verbal communication is also necessary for health care professionals as patients pay close attention to nonverbal communication of professionals to lessen their uncertainty. As for example, a mother having a child with birth defect will read clinician's face to get clue about seriousness of condition. Non verbal communication fulfills several purposes in the communication process. It helps expressing feeling and regulate interaction (Parkes 1996).It can also validate verbal messages and strengthen relationship. The major aspects of non-verbal communication are kinetics, proxemics, paralinguistics, touch, environmental and physical factors (Northouse 1992).Kinetics is study of body motion. Proxemics is the study of how people use the space in interaction. Vocal sounds like ahh-that accompany spoken verbal communication are part of paralinguistic. Touch plays a special role in all kind of relationships. Physical factors like sound, color, room temperature, furniture arrangement creates an impact on interpersonal relationship. In the changing environment of health care, teaching and learning about communication skills has become a part of curriculum for health care students. It has progressed from the stage of necessity to the stage of essentiality for fostering various kinds of relationships existing in health care set up.
