As I stated in my introduction, the work of Bauhaus and De Stijl could, in many ways, be seen as heralding from a period where notions such as urbanisation, mechanisation and technological innovation where not tinged with a sense of pessimism but where instead viewed as containing the potential for a revolution in human thought and aesthetics. This could also be seen as a time, before the Second World War, when all encompassing ideas were not linked to the abuse of power or the exploitation of the individual. In this, perhaps, this period is curiously reminiscent of our own postmodern age that views information technology and the Internet as fulfilling some of the same basic functions as the machine of the 1920s.
