Most common subjects for arts essays
Arts essays can address either the fine arts of the creative arts fields, including painting, sculpting, architecture, dance, song, musical composition, drawing or drama. More broadly, arts essays also encompass the fields of literature, history and philosophy, when the arts are distinguished from the sciences or the humanities fields.
Arts essays in this broad sense investigate or evaluate the interaction of the human spirit in a creative and intellectual endeavour, through some form of physical expression, related to aesthetics, the study of beauty.
Arts essays often investigate human interaction or either a macro or a micro level, finding equal fascination with the minutiae of human psychology, motivation, behaviour and attitudes, as with the grand narratives of human history, whether in relation to warfare, the rise and fall of civilizations, of the advent of democratic forms of government.
Arts essays are attuned to the nuances of language, whether written or visual, through the resonance of symbolism and its impact upon one’s culture. Arts essays celebrate the heights of human achievement through fictional of factual forms, with the intent of enlivening and intensifying human experience, or perhaps forewarning current or future generations of the destructive potentialities inherent in certain anti-social human behaviour traits or habits of mind.
Arts essays often articulate the visual elements of composition within a fine arts subject. The components of the work are evaluated in relation to their overall contribution to how meaning is made and what that meaning is deemed to be.
Any of the fine arts products, whether they be famous paintings such as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Michaelangelo’s renaissance sculpture of David, Wright’s Chicago based architectural innovations or a classical composer’s concerto, are valued within arts essays, and their relative moral, aesthetic, cultural and intellectual merit is debated and assigned.
The decisions concerning how works or art are to be valued, is based upon philosophical and historical assumptions as well as matters of artistic taste. Often arts essays must assess the current contribution a visual written or aural work of art is making currently or has made to a given society.
In this case arts essays must employ a range of criteria to the form the assessment, including but not limited to the level of craftsmanship evident within the work, as well as the novelty or additive value of the work to the existing cultural capital. Each of these factors is relevant to the process.
