Abortion essay
When you are asked to write an essay such as an abortion essay you are being asked to show how well you can show your handling of a controversial topic. This is definitely a challenging essay and a topical one as abortion is constantly in the news and provokes strong feeling in most groups, both for and against. Your tutor will be looking for you to display an awareness of both sides of the argument and offer a balanced view leading to a logical conclusion.
What is an abortion essay?
Well, stated simply, it's an essay about abortion: defining the medical term; suggesting reasons why a person might make the decision to have an abortion; summing up the arguments for and against etc.
What structure is suitable for an abortion essay?
Basically, the structure you would use for any formal academic essay. Something like this:
- An introduction where you briefly address the issue and say how you're going to handle it.
- The main body of the essay; this should be broken up into paragraphs, each addressing a different aspect of the topic and provide 'links' or 'hooks' so that your essay hangs together well, i.e; each paragraph ends with a connective sentence which is picked up at the beginning of the next.
- The conclusion, where you briefly re-state your position, providing a summary of what has been the substance of your essay. It's not a good idea to introduce new evidence at this stage.
So how so I write an abortion essay?
You'll need to show evidence of wide reading on the subject, so read, read, read! In the case of the abortion essay, this will probably take more time than the actual writing because of the amount of material involved. You'll need to search on the internet for sources of information to follow up. The internet is always a good starting point but it should be as carefully cited as all works to which you refer, using the referencing system you have been asked to use. Look at books, journals, newspapers – anything and everything that will show you are aware of all the issues associated with abortion. Keep notes on all your sources as you go along.
Remember that you are dealing with a very controversial issue here. Strong views will e expressed in your reading and your essay should treat this with sensitivity, whether you agree with the expressed views or not. You will be expected to show a high level of maturity in your assessment of the evidence and the formulation of your argument. It is not acceptable to confuse opinion with fact and all statistics should be cross-checked with more than one reliable source. Unfortunately, the strength of conviction which issues such as abortion provoke can sometimes lead people to resort to somewhat strategic use of figures so it is important to be able to rely on those you use.
Beware of the emotive approach. Again, it is topics such as abortion which are most likely to evoke an emotional response. Indeed, many publicity campaigns have been based around just such layouts but they have often been objected to by opposing camps. Your abortion essay will be equally likely to be penalised if it is seen as over-emotional. Try to be rational in both your approach and your expression.
The most successful abortion essays will show awareness of all the arguments, the ability to balance them and the skill to produce a mature, logical argument which shows sensitivity to opposing opinions and yet also has a strong sense of how you are building to a strong, personal conclusion.
