How do Foucault enable us to understand culture?

Foucault’s writings cover a broad range of topics and methodologically are similarly diverse, (Danaher, Schirato and Webb, 2000). Often in a characteristic fashion he referred to his work as offering a ‘toolbox’ from which elements could be drawn in order to engage in the study of society or societal features, (Foucault, 2003). In terms of culture while Foucault does not explicitly announce his intent to study it is however a theme which is implicitly and embedded within much of the work and studies conducted by him. The Body or Embodiment? Discuss

Since ancient times man has struggled with the relationship between body and self.  Many early cultures placed a high emphasis on the body, even performing elaborate rituals on it or encasing it in magnificent structures after a person’s death.  The body-self relationship speaks to some of our deepest questions:  What happens when we die?  Does some part of us live on?  Does self disappear with the decaying carcass of our former selves?  Surprisingly, modern sociological theory has overlooked the concept of body until recently (Turner 1984).  The question now considered is whether the body is a separate entity from self, or an embodiment of self.  (more…)

How much does the idea of the “American Century” owe to the notion of the “American Empire”?

In 1938, Time publisher Henry Luce coined the term the ‘American century’ to refer to America’s influence over the world in the 20th century. This was done during the beginning of World War II in which Luce urged America to defend democracy in an influential editorial of the ‘Time’. America’s foreign policies still today are based on the idea of spreading democracy in the other less powerful countries. (more…)
