Since ancient times man has struggled with the relationship between body and self.  Many early cultures placed a high emphasis on the body, even performing elaborate rituals on it or encasing it in magnificent structures after a person’s death.  The body-self relationship speaks to some of our deepest questions:  What happens when we die?  Does some part of us live on?  Does self disappear with the decaying carcass of our former selves?  Surprisingly, modern sociological theory has overlooked the concept of body until recently (Turner 1984).  The question now considered is whether the body is a separate entity from self, or an embodiment of self.  (more…)
